THE TRAP: A MODERN-DAY JEAN DE FLORETTE

Contact : Jordantatescreenwriter@yahoo.com Someone has just compared my series “the trap”, (le piège) to a modern Jean de Florette ... By comparing “Grego”, the landlord to the Papet in “Jean de Florette”. There are, indeed, some similarities: The “trap”, and I stress that: Based on a true story- takes place in Marseilles, South of France, same region as in “Jean de Florette”, and we notice the same despicable mentalities as those Pagnol described so talently in his work. Because, let's face it, in the light of his films, I don't think Pagnol liked those people and their mentalities very much! The “mind your own business thing” when everyone actually knows the horror happening around them, becomes an offense of non-assistance to persons in danger. Grego is the papet, the bastard, the old and wealthy peasant, who pretends to live in misery... A man with an income of nearly 10,000 euros/month who will only refer to his miserable 180 euros pension. And despite, collecting all his rents, he nevertheless lets the mafia real estate agency continue to extort his tenants, leading the father (just like Jean de Florette) to a tragic fate ... The coward neighbors aware of all the shenanigans happening in this seemingly quiet neighborhood can indeed be compared to the villagers who knew about the spring but left the family's life spiraling into hell, leading the father, just like Jean, to a fatal destiny… Very well observed!
