WOMEN IN FILM- THE FEMALE LEADS IN MY SCREENPLAYS
Female screenwriters are rare breed in the film industry, as you may have guessed, I haven't opted
for the easiest career...Masochist would retort some people, but "passionate" would be my reply.
Creating a universe, characters and let them develop themselves and exist into my stories (yes they do tend to guide me, instead of me leading them, only a writer can understand what I mean) is what I would call BLISS.
There's still a long way to go when it comes to equality in the film industry and the world itself,
only 11 per cent of female writers have been working on the top 250 films of 2014, and that 79 per cent of these films had no female writers at all.
Indeed, discovering (yes, it’s a discovery, not a choice) you’re a female writer and following this pathway, can bring on some very Cro-Magnon man like type reactions from retarded beings clearly meaning, « What? You’re a woman, let’s shut up! Make the meal and carry children! How dare you to speak and above all, write more than me! »
The most pathetic reaction to this, is the retarded man mocking you (mockery revolving around you not earning enough money for instance or not getting what they call a real job, being a secretary for most of them is the only thing a woman should do) and sending you insulting messages!
Yes, as a female writer I've been getting this type of mails from frustrated people!
You'll actually frequently get this from jealous persons from your past. Feeling more virile after that? Good for you!
However, fortunately for us, notorious female artists like Meryl Streep, Jessica Chastain, Patricia Arquette, Anne Hathaway have been fighting to boost opportunities for women. Recently, males like Michael Keaton have joined in this cause, declaring the film industry needs more female filmmakers.
In a recent interview, the graceful and talented actress Jessica Chastain, who plays an astronaut explained why it was so important for her to play this film, hoping that the Martian, as well as other major sci-fi films with women as astronauts, will inspire women to do the same thing in real life. She also added "we'll open up a whole new career path for girls who didn't think it was a possibility. "
It’s CRUCIAL for women to understand that they have new career paths for them, it is fundamental for them to dismiss disdain and keep jealous negative people at bay and go on following their goals!
Women have been fighting to gain more recognition in any industry and especially the film industry for years.
My recent work includes characters like Marguerite Harrison, a female filmmaker and adventurer, who was making documentaries with director Merian Cooper (the adventurer biopic) Marguerite Harrison is a very emblematic character when it comes to females in the film industry, as in the script, she stops making films with Cooper due to sexism in Hollywood. Later, Harrison will be one of the four founding members of the Society of Woman Geographers.
Most of my screenplays feature a strong female lead from the passionate Bonnie Parker, to the fictional big-hearted prostitute fighting for a noble cause, for instance against racism in my screenplay « A SKIN » revolving around the Klux Klux Klan and forbidden interracial marriage in the 19th century.
My upcoming work will feature a world war II female resistant fighter, I’ll also draft the biopic of a famous black actress in the forthcoming months.
I believe there'll be whole new career opportunities for women in film world in the near future! So keep dreaming, keep writing, keep filming, and NEVER LET ANYONE DECIDE FOR YOU because you’re a WOMAN!
