KING KONG
KING KONG
A GEM!
Last week, (Friday) I had the chance to see my favorite creature taking life again on the screen, directed by Peter Jackson: KING KONG!
A funny fact is that such as this famous film maker from New Zealand, KING KONG is behind my passion for cinema since the age of 6: The first time my parents taped a strange tale of a giant beast in love with a woman, a strange tale taking place on a exotic island…
I still can remember my TEARS when seeing the story of the giant ape for the first time, and of course when watching the last scene at that top of the Empire Stage Building, it has been my very « shock » through the big screen.
In his 2005 version, Peter Jackson completely managed to re-create this magical atmosphere and his film is a marvelous homage to his favorite creature!
The film lasts 3 hours, but strangely, we have the feeling it is 120 minutes only, certainly because of the magician Peter Jackson, the rhythm of his story, the non-stop action, the great acting (all the actors are perfect) and the bewitching plot.
We completely fall in love with that film from the very fist image (in the streets of New York
1933 during the great depression) and the very first notes of the music by James Newton Howard (a mix of adventure in a far horizons and mystery)
Ann Darrow’s character played by the angelic Naomi Watts immediately wins the audience, we are all touched by the story of that struggling actress losing her work, her passion, her friends the same day, meeting the movie maker Carl Denham (excellent Jack Black) who appears like the only man able to bring her redemption and a new life.
The film is also an excellent mix of romance (Ann and the screenwriter Jack Driscoll played by the charming, classy and very talented Adrian Brody and of course Ann and Kong)
Humor, anguish and adventure, and a flood of impressive and gigantic sets:
« SKULL ISLAND » is amazing! The natives, very original, and very different from the ones seen in the 1933 version and the 1976 one, really plunge the audience and the characters in another world from the first time they enter the island! A world of fear, danger, violence and nightmare! Creating a real journey into hell!
Peter Jackson’s King Kong is above all a marvelous and unique story of friendship between a human and a beast, the way they learn to understand each others, communicate, then love each others is very moving!
TWO OF MY FAVORITE SCENES ARE:
The one on the mountain when Ann feeling protected by Kong, finally falls asleep peacefully in his hand, and the first time they communicate while looking at the sun-set on the jungle, then, the other sunset on the top of the empire state building during the last scene, one of the most fabulous of all the cinema history!
We can feel this incredible bound linking them, this unique relation they share since their unusual meeting and at that moment we see the most endearing side of the wild beast frightening the superstitious natives and the « civilized » humans.
To sum up, King Kong is the poignant story of 2 lonely beings understanding and protecting each others until the end.
I really recommend this gem which is also a fabulous fable on humanity and how the madness of men dreaming of success finally creates a tragedy, leading several people to death and to destroying the life of a majestic wild creature only survivor of an undiscovered animal specie!
King Kong 2005 is a splendid creation and we can feel all the passion the director has for this story in every image, every line, every second! This passion he manages to pass on during 3 hours of pure
Enchantment!
Thanks Mr. Jackson for all those dreams on the big screen!
